SERVPRO of Cumberland, Morgan & White Counties is here to assist with all fire mitigation and restoration needs. That being said, keeping a functional fire extinguisher in your home or business is one of the best measures against fire damage and towards safety. Checking fire extinguishers routinely is a must.
Know Where to Locate the Apparatus
The location of the fire extinguisher should be known to all occupants in the structure. This can be achieved vocally or visually through either verbally telling someone or by displaying a map of the location.
Inspecting Fire Extinguishers
Once you locate the portable extinguishers, the next step is learning the process of visual inspection. Visual inspections should include the following steps:
- Access to the extinguisher is key. Make sure that it is not obstructed by storage bins, file cabinets, or similar items
- Make sure the extinguisher is mounted in a location where it is visible and easy to locate during an emergency
- Check the tamper-seal to verify it is not broken or missing
- Ensure the pull-pin is not missing
- Check the pressure gauge to make sure the indicator is in the operating range (the needle should be located in the green portion of the gauge)
- Check the extinguisher for obvious physical damage, corrosion, leakage, or a clogged nozzle, and report any problems with campus extinguishers to Fire Prevention Services so we can make corrective measures
- Keep track of when the last professional inspection was. This information is likely written on a paper inspection tag.
After using an extinguisher be sure to have it professionally refilled and inspected.
